ConfigurationPL22 — Ceiling Panel

The sky, mounted. No recess required.

The SkyLume PL brings Rayleigh scattering sky simulation to solid ceilings. Designed for spaces where recessing is impossible or impractical, the PL mounts directly to the ceiling surface with a clean 70mm profile — no cavity, no suspended grid, no structural modifications.

The Concept

Many of the spaces that would benefit most from artificial sky lighting — concrete-slab apartments, heritage buildings, retail units with services above the ceiling — cannot accommodate recessed fixtures. The SkyLume PL was engineered specifically for these environments. Its 70mm profile contains the complete optical system: LED array, Rayleigh scattering diffusion stack, thermal management layer, and driver interface. The result is a surface-mounted panel that produces the same sky effect as the recessed PY series, without requiring any ceiling void at all.

The PL22 houses four individual sky panels, each measuring 527 x 227mm, within a single rigid aluminum chassis. At 1236 x 636mm, the unit's footprint is compact enough to center above a desk, bed, or dining table while producing an expansive overhead sky field. The 160-watt output delivers over 6,000 lumens of tunable, high-CRI light through the scattering optics — sufficient to serve as the primary ceiling light in rooms up to 20 square meters.

Mounting is straightforward: four or six points anchored directly into the ceiling material — concrete, timber joist, or steel deck. The included bracket system supports the unit's 29.8 kg weight and allows fine leveling adjustment after installation. All wiring routes through the back of the chassis and exits through a single conduit port, keeping the visible installation clean and professional.

Key Features

  • Rayleigh Scattering Optics — Four-panel diffusion array generates atmospheric blue-sky depth directly from the ceiling surface. No cavity or backlight box required.
  • 70mm Surface Profile — Slim enough to appear architectural rather than industrial. Projects only slightly more than a standard surface-mount smoke detector.
  • 6,000+ Lumens — Adequate output for primary ambient lighting in residential and light commercial spaces. Dimmable to 1% for nighttime or accent use.
  • CRI >93 Ra — Faithful color rendering across the visible spectrum. Suitable for art studios, retail displays, and medical examination rooms.
  • Tunable White 2100-7500K — Full CCT range supports circadian scheduling and manual scene setting. Warm evening tones to crisp daylight on demand.
  • Zero Ceiling Void — Mounts to any solid overhead surface. Ideal for concrete slabs, timber ceilings, exposed structures, and heritage interiors where recessing is prohibited.
  • Passive Thermal Design — The aluminum chassis doubles as a heatsink, eliminating the need for fans. Operation is completely silent.
  • Smart Control: BLE 5.0 / DALI / 0-10V — Three control interfaces for residential, commercial, and legacy integration.

Ideal Spaces

The PL excels in concrete-ceiling apartments and lofts where recessing is physically impossible. Basement conversions with limited headroom benefit from the slim 70mm profile. Heritage and listed buildings where structural modifications are restricted can add sky lighting without altering the ceiling plane. Commercial spaces with services routed above a solid ceiling — particularly retail, hospitality, and medical treatment rooms — gain natural-feeling overhead light without construction. Home bedrooms and living rooms in buildings with solid slab construction gain a permanent sky feature that replaces conventional flush-mount fixtures.

What's in the Box

  • SkyLume PL22 ceiling panel unit (4 sky panels pre-installed)
  • Surface-mount bracket set with leveling adjustment
  • LED driver unit (160W)
  • Power cable with conduit adapter
  • Ceiling anchors for concrete, timber, and steel deck
  • Installation template and manual

Installation

  1. Mark mounting points. Position the paper template on the ceiling at the desired location. Use a laser level to ensure alignment. Mark the four or six anchor points through the template.
  2. Install brackets. Drill into the ceiling material and fix the mounting brackets using the appropriate anchors for your ceiling type. Adjust the leveling screws to compensate for any ceiling irregularity.
  3. Mount the panel. With two people, lift the PL22 unit and engage it with the ceiling brackets. Secure with locking screws. Fine-tune the leveling adjustment so the panel face sits flush and even.
  4. Wire and commission. Route the driver power cable through the rear conduit port to the nearest electrical supply. Mount the driver on top of the chassis or in an adjacent ceiling space. Power on and configure via BLE app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a ceiling void for the PL?

No. The SkyLume PL is a surface-mount unit designed specifically for solid ceilings with no void above. It mounts directly to concrete slabs, timber ceilings, or steel deck using the included bracket system. The entire optical stack — LEDs, scattering films, and driver interface — is contained within the 70mm profile chassis.

How heavy is the PL22?

The PL22 weighs 29.8 kg. The mounting bracket system is rated for this load on concrete, timber, and steel ceilings. We strongly recommend two-person installation and the use of appropriate anchors for your ceiling material. The included anchor set covers concrete expansion bolts, timber screws, and steel deck clips.

Is 6,000 lumens enough for a room?

For a typical bedroom, living room, or office up to approximately 20 square meters, 6,000 lumens provides comfortable ambient lighting levels. The PL's wide 120-degree beam angle distributes light evenly across the room. For larger spaces or task-intensive environments, supplement with dedicated task lighting.

Can I install it in a bathroom?

The PL22 carries an IP20 rating, which means it is suitable for dry interior locations. It is not rated for direct exposure to moisture or steam. In bathrooms, install it in zones outside the shower and bath splash areas — typically Zone 2 or beyond, depending on local electrical codes. Consult a qualified electrician for bathroom installations.

How does it differ from the PY recessed model?

The PL and PY use identical sky panel optics and produce the same sky effect. The difference is mounting: the PY is designed for recessed installation into drop ceilings or drywall with approximately 180mm of ceiling void, while the PL mounts to the surface of solid ceilings with no void required. Choose the PY if you have a suspended ceiling grid; choose the PL if you have a solid slab or timber ceiling.

Can I dim the PL?

Yes. The PL supports smooth continuous dimming from 100% to 1% via BLE app, DALI-2 controller, or 0-10V signal. Dimming is flicker-free across the entire range. Color temperature can also be adjusted independently from brightness, allowing you to create warm dim scenes or cool bright worklight modes.

What maintenance is required?

The PL has no moving parts, no filters, and no consumable components. The PMMA diffuser can be cleaned with a soft dry cloth or mild glass cleaner on a quarterly basis. LED modules are rated for 30,000 hours and are not user-replaceable — contact Extoril support for module service beyond the warranty period.

What is the warranty?

The SkyLume PL is covered by Extoril's 3-year limited warranty on all electrical components, LED modules, optical films, and the chassis. Mounting brackets carry a 5-year structural warranty. The warranty covers manufacturing defects and premature luminous decay.
