SkyLume PY — Recessed Embedded Panel
Flush with the ceiling. Open to the sky.
The SkyLume PY is a recessed artificial skylight designed to integrate seamlessly into drop ceilings and drywall cavities. Once installed, the panel face sits perfectly flush with the surrounding ceiling plane — the only visible element is the sky itself.
The Concept
The most convincing artificial skylights are the ones you stop noticing as fixtures. The SkyLume PY achieves this by disappearing into the ceiling architecture entirely. Its recessed design slots into standard suspended ceiling grids (T-bar systems with 600mm or 1200mm modules) or custom drywall cutouts, leaving only the luminous sky surface visible from below. The effect is remarkably close to a real architectural skylight — a rectangle of open sky overhead, framed by the ceiling itself.
Three sizes cover the most common ceiling grid formats. The 300x600mm panel replaces a single half-tile in narrow corridors and small rooms. The 600x600mm panel drops into any standard 2x2 grid position — the worldwide default for commercial suspended ceilings. The 600x1200mm panel fills a full 2x4 grid bay, creating an expansive sky aperture suitable for open-plan offices, healthcare facilities, and retail spaces. All three sizes share the same optical platform: Rayleigh scattering diffusion films over tunable-white LED arrays, producing the characteristic blue sky gradient with atmospheric depth.
Installation follows the same workflow as any recessed ceiling panel: remove the existing tile, place the PY into the grid opening, connect power, and commission. The panels require approximately 180mm of ceiling void above the grid rail to accommodate the optical chamber and driver housing. For drywall ceilings, a framing kit (included) creates the support structure within the cutout.
Key Features
- Seamless Recessed Integration — Panel face sits flush with ceiling grid or drywall surface. No visible frame, no protruding profile. The sky appears to be part of the architecture.
- Rayleigh Scattering Optics — Multi-layer nano-particle diffuser produces realistic sky depth and blue gradient. Consistent optical performance across all three panel sizes.
- Three Standard Sizes — 300x600mm, 600x600mm, and 600x1200mm match worldwide suspended ceiling grid formats. Direct tile replacement with no grid modification.
- High CRI >93 Ra — True-to-life color rendering for workspaces, healthcare environments, and retail displays.
- Tunable White 2100-7500K — Continuously adjustable color temperature with programmable circadian scheduling.
- Flicker-Free Dimming — Smooth 100% to 1% dimming via BLE, DALI-2, or 0-10V without flicker or color shift at any level.
- Drop Ceiling Compatible — Designed for standard T-bar grid systems. Also installs into custom drywall cutouts using the included framing kit.
- 120-Degree Beam Angle — Wide distribution ensures even illumination across the space below without hot spots or harsh shadows.
Ideal Spaces
The PY is the natural choice for any commercial space with suspended ceilings: open-plan offices pursuing biophilic and wellness certifications, healthcare facilities where patient wellbeing is linked to daylight exposure, educational institutions seeking to improve focus and alertness, and retail environments using sky panels as visual anchors above key merchandise zones. In residential settings, the PY suits basements and bonus rooms with drywall ceilings that have adequate void depth. Corridors, elevator lobbies, and transitional spaces benefit dramatically from even a single recessed sky panel.

What's in the Box
- SkyLume PY sky panel (selected size)
- T-bar grid clips (set of 4)
- Drywall framing kit (for non-grid installations)
- LED driver (matched to panel wattage)
- Quick-connect power cable
- Safety wire and ceiling anchor
- Installation manual
Installation
- Prepare the opening. For T-bar grids: remove the existing ceiling tile from the target bay. For drywall: cut the opening to size using the included template and install the drywall framing kit to create a support ledge.
- Position the driver. Mount the LED driver on the ceiling slab or structural member above the opening. Ensure there is at least 180mm of vertical clearance between the grid rail and the slab to accommodate the panel depth and driver.
- Drop in the panel. Lower the PY panel through the opening and rest it on the grid rails or drywall frame ledge. Secure with the T-bar clips or frame screws. Attach the safety wire to the ceiling structure above as a secondary support.
- Connect and commission. Plug the quick-connect cable from the panel into the driver. Power on and verify operation. Pair with the BLE app to configure scenes, dimming, and circadian schedules.
Frequently Asked Questions
What ceiling void depth do I need?
The SkyLume PY requires approximately 180mm of clear space above the ceiling grid rail or drywall ledge. This accommodates the panel's optical chamber and allows room for the driver and wiring. Most commercial suspended ceilings provide 300mm or more of void, which is more than sufficient. If your void is shallower than 180mm, consider the SkyLume PT (36mm hanging wire panel) or PL (70mm surface mount) as alternatives.
Does it fit standard ceiling grids?
Yes. The PY panels are dimensioned to fit standard T-bar suspended ceiling grids used worldwide. The 600x600mm panel fits 2x2 grid bays (common in Europe, Asia, and Australia). The 600x1200mm panel fits 2x4 grid bays (common in North America). The 300x600mm fits half-bays or can be paired in a full bay. Both 15mm and 24mm T-bar profiles are supported with the included clip set.
Can I install it in drywall?
Yes. Each PY panel ships with a drywall framing kit that creates a structural support ledge inside a ceiling cutout. The kit includes aluminum angle brackets, screws, and a cutting template. Installation in drywall requires access to the void above — either through an attic space or via a temporary access panel adjacent to the installation location.
How does the PY compare to the PT hanging wire model?
Both use the same Rayleigh scattering optics and are available in the same three sizes. The PY is fully recessed — it sits flush within the ceiling plane for a clean architectural look. The PT hangs below the ceiling on wires using a modular keel system, making it suitable for spaces where recessing is not possible. The PY requires ~180mm of ceiling void; the PT requires only wire anchor points in the slab above.
Is it bright enough for office use?
The 600x600mm PY at 60W produces 2,580 lumens, comparable to a standard office troffer. The 600x1200mm at 100W produces 5,000 lumens, exceeding most office fixtures. For open-plan offices, multiple PY panels can be installed across the ceiling grid to create a distributed sky canopy. The high CRI (>93 Ra) ensures screen content and documents render accurately.
Can I combine PY panels with regular ceiling tiles?
Absolutely. The PY is designed to coexist with standard ceiling tiles in the same grid. You can install one PY panel as a focal sky feature, or create clusters and lines of sky panels interspersed with regular tiles. The flush mounting ensures a clean visual transition between sky panels and adjacent tiles.
What is the warranty?
Extoril provides a 3-year limited warranty on all PY panels, covering LED modules, optical films, driver, and housing. The warranty covers manufacturing defects and luminous degradation below L70 rated hours. Grid clips and framing kits carry a 5-year structural warranty.
Does it require maintenance?
The PY has no serviceable parts under normal operation. Clean the PMMA diffuser face with a soft dry cloth or mild glass cleaner as needed — typically quarterly in standard office environments. The LED modules and driver are rated for 30,000 hours of operation. End-of-life servicing is available through Extoril's support program.
